NHS Christmas Pay 2026: Bank Holiday Rates & Pay Dates
Last updated: 28 September 2026 · Figures verified against the NHS Employers 2026/27 pay circular.
Christmas 2026 bank holiday dates
The festive bank holidays in 2026 fall in an unusual pattern. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026. Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December, lands on a weekend — so under the standard substitute-day rule the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December 2026. New Year's Day is Friday 1 January 2027.
| 2026/27 festive bank holidays (England & Wales) | Date | Day |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas Day | 25 December 2026 | Friday |
| Boxing Day (substitute day) | 28 December 2026 | Monday |
| New Year's Day | 1 January 2027 | Friday |
For staff this means a natural four-day weekend over Christmas (Friday 25 to Monday 28 December) and another three-day weekend for New Year. The full list of bank holidays across the year is on our NHS bank holiday pay guide.
Bank holiday enhancement rates by band
Christmas pay in the NHS is governed by Section 2 of the Agenda for Change handbook, which sets unsocial-hours enhancements for public holidays. These are the same rates that apply to any public holiday — Christmas simply concentrates several of them into one week:
| Pay band | Public-holiday enhancement | Effective multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| Band 1 | Double time | ×2.0 |
| Band 2 | Time plus 88% | ×1.88 |
| Band 3 | Time plus 74% | ×1.74 |
| Bands 4–9 | Time plus 60% | ×1.6 |
These enhancements apply to the hours you actually work on the public holiday, and they apply on top of your basic hourly rate. For the full year-round rules, see NHS unsocial hours and overtime pay.

Worked examples: what a Christmas shift is worth
Using the 2026/27 Agenda for Change rates for England (hourly = annual ÷ 52.2 ÷ 37.5), here is what Christmas Day hours pay at each band before tax, National Insurance and pension:
| Band and position | Basic hourly | Christmas hourly | 12-hour shift |
|---|---|---|---|
| Band 2 (spot rate) | £12.91 | £24.27 | £291.24 |
| Band 3 (top) | £14.04 | £24.43 | £293.16 |
| Band 5 (entry) | £16.38 | £26.21 | £314.50 |
| Band 5 (top) | £19.95 | £31.92 | £383.04 |
| Band 6 (entry) | £20.41 | £32.66 | £391.87 |
| Band 7 (top) | £28.87 | £46.19 | £554.30 |
| Band 8a (top) | £33.08 | £52.93 | £635.14 |
A few points about these figures. First, they assume the whole shift falls on the public holiday itself; hours on a normal day either side are paid at the normal rate (plus any night/weekend enhancements due). Second, they are gross — your December payslip will still deduct income tax, National Insurance and your NHS pension contribution. Third, London weighting (HCAS) is part of basic salary, so it benefits from the enhancement too — see NHS London weighting 2026/27.
Overtime and double time over Christmas
Christmas is the time of year when the overtime rules matter most, because the two payments interact. Under Section 3 of the handbook:
- Bands 1–7: overtime on a bank or public holiday is paid at double time (rather than the usual time-and-a-half). A Band 5 at the top of the band (£19.95/hour) earns £39.90 an hour for overtime on Christmas Day.
- Overtime and unsocial-hours enhancement cannot both be claimed for the same hours. You receive whichever is higher for those hours — in practice the double-time overtime rate.
- Bands 8–9: there is no contractual overtime pay, even at Christmas. Time off in lieu (TOIL) is the standard arrangement.
- Part-time staff: hours above your contracted hours up to 37.5 a week are paid at plain time (plus the public-holiday enhancement if worked on the holiday itself). Overtime rates apply only above 37.5.
- You can elect to take TOIL instead of overtime pay, by agreement.
If you regularly pick up extra shifts in December, remember that December overtime is normally paid in the following month's payroll — so Christmas overtime shows up in your January pay. See our NHS pay dates calendar for how payroll cut-off dates work.
Boxing Day 2026 and the substitute day
Because Boxing Day (26 December) falls on a Saturday in 2026, the bank holiday is observed on Monday 28 December 2026. Under Agenda for Change, the public-holiday enhancement applies to the designated bank holiday — the substitute day, not the Saturday.
This catches people out every time it happens. If you work the Saturday 26 December itself, that is an ordinary Saturday: bands 4–9 receive the Saturday enhancement of time plus 30% (Band 2 time plus 44%, Band 3 time plus 37%), not the public-holiday rate. The time-plus-60% rate applies to Monday 28 December. Check your roster carefully and raise any discrepancy with your manager before payroll closes.
Time off in lieu and bank holiday leave
If you are not rostered to work on a bank holiday, you are not paid extra for it. Bank holidays sit inside your annual leave entitlement — 27 days plus 8 bank holidays on appointment in England, rising with service (see NHS annual leave entitlement). Your December salary is simply your normal monthly 1/12th, whether you worked Christmas or not.
Staff who work on a public holiday are generally entitled to an equivalent period of time off in lieu, in addition to the enhancement — a day in lieu for a full public-holiday shift is the common arrangement, though local policies vary. Part-time staff receive bank holiday entitlement pro rata; where a bank holiday falls on a day you would not normally work, many trusts credit the hours to your leave balance rather than paying them out.
December pay dates
Most trusts bring December pay forward so it lands before Christmas rather than on the usual end-of-month date — a common payment date is a few working days before 25 December. The exact date varies by trust and by payroll provider, and it is announced on ESR or your trust intranet in November. If you are due bank-holiday enhancements for Christmas shifts, note that payroll cut-off dates also move earlier in December: a shift worked on 28 December may fall into the January pay run. Check your trust's payroll calendar rather than assuming December's payslip covers the whole festive period.
NHS staff are paid monthly, in arrears, at 1/12th of the annual salary. A normal December payday would fall very close to the Christmas bank holidays, so most trusts bring the December pay run forward so that pay lands in bank accounts before Christmas — commonly a few working days before 25 December.
The exact date differs by trust and is usually announced by payroll or on the intranet in November. Bank staff on weekly or monthly bank payrolls may have different cut-off dates, and timesheet deadlines are often earlier in December. If you are new, check our NHS pay dates guide and confirm your trust's published date rather than assuming last year's.
Bank staff and Christmas pay
Bank workers are paid for the hours they actually work, and the unsocial-hours enhancement applies to bank shifts on public holidays in the same way as for substantive staff — so a Christmas Day bank shift attracts the public-holiday enhancement on the bank hourly rate. Overtime rules for bank staff depend on the trust's bank terms; some bank contracts pay flat rates for additional hours. Because bank payroll cut-offs move earlier in December, submit timesheets as early as possible or the Christmas shifts may not be paid until January.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
The enhancement rates above apply to Agenda for Change staff UK-wide, but the bank holiday calendars differ. NHS Scotland staff get 2 January as well as the Christmas and substitute Boxing Day holidays; Scotland also moved to a 36-hour week in 2026, so overtime thresholds differ. NHS Wales follows the England pattern for the festive dates. Northern Ireland staff should note the 2026/27 award was still awaiting implementation at the time of writing — verify locally which rates your trust is paying.
Staff on maternity, sick or parental leave over Christmas are paid under those schemes' rules, not the bank holiday rates — see NHS maternity pay and NHS sick pay.
Frequently asked questions
Do NHS staff get extra pay for working Christmas Day?
Yes. Christmas Day is a public holiday, so Agenda for Change staff are paid unsocial-hours enhancements for hours worked: bands 4 to 9 get time plus 60%, Band 3 time plus 74%, Band 2 time plus 88%, and Band 1 double time. There is no separate Christmas bonus — the enhancement is the public-holiday rate under Section 2 of the handbook.
Is Boxing Day 2026 a bank holiday for the NHS?
Yes. Boxing Day falls on Saturday 26 December 2026, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December 2026 as a substitute day. Staff working on the substitute day receive the public-holiday enhancement instead of those working on the Saturday.
How much is a Christmas shift worth for a Band 5 nurse?
At the top of Band 5 (£19.95 an hour in 2026/27), the public-holiday enhancement of time plus 60% gives about £31.92 an hour. A 12-hour Christmas Day shift is therefore worth roughly £383 before overtime rules, tax and pension deductions.
Do NHS staff get double time for overtime on bank holidays?
Bands 1 to 7 receive double time for overtime worked on bank and public holidays (instead of the usual time-and-a-half). Bands 8 and 9 do not get contractual overtime pay; time off in lieu is the standard arrangement.
Do NHS staff get paid early in December?
Most trusts bring the December payday forward so staff are paid before Christmas, because a normal late-December pay date would fall on or near the bank holidays. The exact date varies by trust and is usually published by payroll or on the intranet in November.
Do bank staff get enhanced pay at Christmas?
Bank staff are generally paid for hours worked at the agreed bank rate plus the unsocial-hours enhancement for the shifts they work, so Christmas Day hours attract the public-holiday enhancement. Exact arrangements vary between trusts and bank providers.
What happens to unsocial hours pay if I take annual leave over Christmas?
Pay during annual leave is calculated as if at work, including regularly received unsocial-hours enhancements averaged over a reference period. Occasional extra shifts are not averaged; check your trust's local arrangement.
Are NHS staff paid for bank holidays they do not work?
If you are not rostered to work on a bank holiday, you simply receive your normal salary — bank holidays are included in the annual leave and public-holiday entitlement (27 days plus 8 bank holidays on appointment in England), not paid as extra.
