NHS Health Visitor Salary 2026/27

Last updated: 28 September 2026 · Figures verified against the NHS Employers 2026/27 pay circular.

Health visitor pay: Band 6 in 2026/27

Health visitors are Band 6: £39,959–£48,117 in England in 2026/27, following the 3.3% Agenda for Change uplift effective 1 April 2026. Health visiting requires the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) qualification on top of nursing or midwifery registration — which makes the training pay position, covered below, as important as the destination salary.

Pay stepAnnual (FTE)Monthly grossHourly
Entry£39,959£3,330£20.41
Intermediate£42,170£3,514£21.54
Top of band£48,117£4,010£24.58

All figures are full-time equivalent for England. See NHS Band 6 pay for the band in full, including the 2025/26 comparison (£38,682–£46,580).

Take-home pay: worked example

Approximate monthly take-home for England in 2026/27 (standard 1257L tax code, no student loan, before any enhancements). Band 6 salaries sit in the 9.8% pension tier (2025/26 thresholds; 2026/27 unpublished at the time of writing).

ExampleGross/monthPensionIncome taxNational InsuranceTake-home/month
Health visitor, Band 6 entry (£39,959)£3,330£326£391£183£2,430
Health visitor, Band 6 top (£48,117)£4,010£393£514£237£2,866

That is roughly £2,430 a month at entry and £2,866 at the top of the band.

The SCPHN route: training pay and the Band 6 destination

The SCPHN (health visiting) course is typically a year, studied while employed — usually on secondment from a nursing or midwifery post. That means you keep being paid during training: normally at your existing band and salary (a Band 5 nurse, say, continues at Band 5), with the employer funding the course. On qualifying and taking up a health visitor post, pay moves to Band 6: £39,959 at entry. The economics are therefore very different from a university degree — no tuition debt, no lost earnings year — which is why health visiting attracts experienced Band 5 nurses and midwives looking for a funded route to Band 6. Midwives are particularly well represented: the SCPHN builds directly on midwifery registration.

The hours reality: weekday working vs ward enhancements

Health visiting is overwhelmingly Monday–Friday, daytime work — home visits, clinics, safeguarding meetings. That is a major lifestyle selling point, and it has a direct pay consequence: almost no unsocial-hours enhancements. Compare two Band 6 nurses:

Health visitor (Band 6)Ward nurse (Band 6)
2026/27 basic pay£39,959–£48,117 — identical
Typical enhancementsMinimal — occasional Saturday clinicsHigh — nights, weekends, +30%/+60%
On-callRareRota-dependent
Working patternWeekdays, predictable24/7 rota
Typical total take-homeClose to basicBasic + hundreds/month in enhancements

A health visitor at the top of Band 6 (£48,117) and a ward nurse at the top of Band 6 (£48,117) have the same basic salary — but the ward nurse's enhancements can add £500+ a month. Health visitors accept that trade knowingly: the payoff is evenings, weekends and nights free. Anyone moving from a ward to health visiting should budget for the enhancement drop — it is the most common financial surprise in the transition.

Car, lease schemes and mileage

Health visiting means driving between home visits all day, so transport terms matter. Most employers offer lease car schemes or mileage payments at Agenda for Change rates for regular car users. As with district nursing, check whether the post qualifies as regular car use — and note that salary-sacrifice lease cars slightly reduce pensionable pay, which can matter near a pension tier boundary.

School nursing: the parallel Band 6 route

School nurses — also SCPHN-qualified, working with school-age children — are the parallel profession: same Band 6 (£39,959–£48,117), same weekday pattern, same training-while-employed model. Some school nursing posts are term-time only, which reduces annual pay proportionally: always annualise a term-time offer before comparing it with a 52-week health visiting post. The two workforces overlap heavily, and nurses move between them.

Part-time patterns: the pro-rata maths

Health visiting has a heavily part-time workforce. Salary = full-time equivalent × (contracted hours ÷ 37.5), at the same hourly rate (£20.41–£24.58). A health visitor at the Band 6 intermediate step (£42,170) working three days a week (22.5 hours, 0.6 WTE) earns £25,302 a year — £2,108 a month gross. Annual leave is pro rata (see NHS annual leave), and enhancements — such as they are — are calculated on hours actually worked.

Career progression

  • Band 6 health visitor: the destination role — caseload holding, universal and targeted contacts, safeguarding.
  • Band 7: team leader, practice educator, specialist roles (infant feeding, perinatal mental health).
  • Beyond: service manager, consultant health visitor (8a) and public-health leadership roles.

Frequently asked questions

What band is a health visitor?

Band 6: £39,959–£48,117 in England in 2026/27 (£20.41–£24.58 an hour, full-time equivalent, before enhancements — of which health visitors earn few).

How do I become a health visitor and what does training pay?

Via the SCPHN (health visiting) course — usually a year, studied while employed on secondment, so you keep your existing salary (e.g. Band 5) during training with the course employer-funded. On qualifying, you move to Band 6 (£39,959).

Do health visitors earn less than ward nurses?

Basic pay is identical at the same band. In practice, ward nurses take home more because 24/7 rotas generate large unsocial-hours enhancements, while health visiting is mostly weekday daytime with few enhancements. The trade-off is predictable hours with no nights.

Do health visitors get unsocial hours pay?

Rarely in practice — the +30%/+60% Section 2 rates apply where worked, but health visiting rotas generate few qualifying hours. Occasional Saturday clinics are the main exception.

What is the difference between a health visitor and a school nurse?

Both are SCPHN-qualified Band 6 roles (£39,959–£48,117): health visitors work with under-5s and families, school nurses with school-age children. Some school nursing posts are term-time only, which reduces annual pay — always annualise before comparing.

Can health visitors work part-time?

Yes — much of the workforce does. Pay is strictly pro rata at the same hourly rate: a 0.6 WTE health visitor at the Band 6 intermediate step earns about £25,302 a year.

How long does it take to reach the top of Band 6 as a health visitor?

Band 6 has three pay steps — entry, intermediate (2+ years) and top (5+ years) — so around five years from starting as a health visitor, subject to appraisal and mandatory training.

The national shortage and what it means for pay

Health visiting has carried significant vacancies for years, and shortages move pay at the margins: some trusts offer local recruitment and retention premia or "golden hellos" for health visitor posts — time-limited, trust-specific, always worth asking about, never assumed. The structural effect is subtler: persistent demand means experienced Band 6 health visitors (£39,959–£48,117) can be selective about caseload size, flexible working and location in a way few other community roles allow. Shortage does not change the national scale — only the Pay Review Body does that, 3.3% in 2026/27 — but it changes your negotiating position over everything around the scale.

Health visiting in the devolved nations

Outside England, health visitors are paid on the devolved Agenda for Change scales — Scotland's 3.75% two-year deal, Wales's 3.3% award — with the same Band 6 positioning. In Northern Ireland, the 3.3% recommendation has not yet been implemented, so English figures should not be assumed there. The role's content is set by each nation's public-health framework (England's Healthy Child Programme differs from Scotland's universal health visiting pathway), which matters more to daily practice than the modest pay differences between nations.

The 3.3% uplift in cash terms

The 2026/27 award of 3.3%, effective 1 April 2026, is worth about £1,319 a year at the bottom of Band 6 (£39,959) and £1,588 at the top (£48,117) — roughly £110–£132 a month before tax.

Pay progression

From the top of Band 6 (£48,117), team-lead roles pay Band 7 rates (£49,387–£56,515). Compare community routes: district nurse salary and midwife salary (the other SCPHN feeder profession).
